The Playful Book
with Kathy Steinsberger & Diann Fuller
In this workshop we'll stretch ourselves and explore the natural beauty of Gray Bear as we create our own handmade long-stitch journals. We'll enjoy mark-making and stamping as we make our own paste papers for beautiful illustrated pockets, pages, and covers for our books. We'll include some fun pop-ups and folded elements, and also bend ourselves as we start each day with Diann leading us in Yoga! And we'll share our stories, our favorite quotes, our poems, and our inspirations as we take deep breaths of gratitude and exhalations of peace. And finally, we'll collaborate to create a bunch of wonderful little story books to take home a sample of each participant's storytelling genius... and a delightful memento of our fun time together.
Kathy has been a book artist and ceramic artist for 20 years. In addition to teaching at Gray Bear, she has taught book arts classes at Pullen Arts Center and Cary Arts Center (Raleigh, NC); at Beaufort Arts Center (Beaufort, NC); workshops at Carlow College (Pittsburgh, PA); the NCSU School of Design (Raleigh, NC); and at Penland School of Crafts (Penland, NC). Her books have been in numerous shows and exhibitions in NC, SC, and PA. Examples of her pottery have been included in the books Handbuilt Tableware II and 500 Pitchers. She has participated in juried national shows including the Strictly Functional Pottery National (Petersburgh, PA) and the Boxheart Gallery International Show (Pittsburgh, PA).

Gray Bear is home to 400 acres of rolling hills, thick forest, natural springs, and even a waterfall. You can experience the wonders of nature while sitting in a hand-built wood fire sauna; hear the silence of nature's symphony lying on a hammock while curled under a blanket; and revel in clear air and water while using shower outdoors.
With all of this nature we have some suggestions to consider when packing:
- Working flashlight ...it gets dark with only the light of the stars to guide you!
- A bathing suit ... good for the hot tub, sauna, and Watsu massage pool
- Water bottle ...Gray Bear does not use disposable cups. Purified water is available in the Main House and the Yoga Room
- A bath robe/sarong
- House slippers or socks to wear indoors ...no shoes inside please
- Comfortable walking shoes/sandals for an inspired nature hike
- Warm clothing ...mornings & evenings can be cool
- Comfortable clothes for exercising/yoga
